Quick answer
Water under a dishwasher usually comes from one of a few places: suds from the wrong detergent, a worn or dirty door gasket, an unlevel tub, a loose supply or drain hose, or a worn pump seal or inlet valve inside the machine. [1] Switch off the dishwasher's breaker, close the water valve under the sink and dry the floor. [1] Where the water starts tells you whether it is a homeowner fix or a service call, and wet flooring or cabinets need to be dry within 24 to 48 hours. [14]
Do this first: cut the power and the water
A dishwasher sits on the floor under a countertop, so the water you see at the front may be only part of what is under it. Whirlpool's leak guide says that if an active leak continues, switch off power at the breaker and shut the water supply, and avoid running the dishwasher until the source is fixed. [1]
Stop the cycle. If the tub is full of suds, cancel it and let the suds settle.
Check for electricity. If water is near outlets, cords or the panel, do not enter the water. Turn power off at the panel only if you can reach it from a dry spot; otherwise call the utility or an electrician. CDC says never to turn power on or off while standing in water. [2]
Turn off the dishwasher's breaker at the panel, or unplug it if it plugs in under the sink. [3]
Close the water valve under the kitchen sink that feeds the dishwasher. [3]
Soak up the water with towels or a wet/dry vacuum, as Whirlpool suggests. [1] Pull out anything stored in the sink cabinet and check its floor.
Take photos of the floor, the cabinet base and the kick panel area before repairs. The Texas Department of Insurance says to take pictures before making repairs and to keep damaged items until your adjuster has seen them. [4]
If your dishwasher flashed a leak code
Some models detect water under the tub. GE says dishwashers with Floor Protect with Alert show LEAK DETECTED, cancel the cycle and pump out the water, and to disconnect power until it is repaired if it is also beeping. [5] Bosch says an E15 code means the safety switch has detected water in the base and the leakage protection system has activated; it says to turn off the water inflow and contact its support. [6]
Where is the water coming from?
Dry the floor completely, then run a short cycle with a flashlight ready and watch where the first drops appear. Whirlpool sorts leaks by where they start. [1] GE notes that a small pan under some models catches leaks of up to 19 ounces and tips larger leaks out the front so you can see them, so on those models, water at the front may have started somewhere else underneath. [5]

If the dishwasher is dry but the floor next to it is wet, look at the sink, the disposal and the drain under the sink too. A neighbor appliance can leak the same way; the guide to a washing machine leaking from underneath walks through supply and drain hoses on a washer.
Fixes you can safely do yourself
Safe to do yourself
With the power off and the water valve closed, you can clear suds, clean or reseat the door gasket, level the unit, rinse the filter, clean the air gap and tighten hose clamps. Whirlpool's leak guide lists these among its checks and DIY fixes to try before service. [1] Check your Use and Care Guide for your model first. [3]
Suds. GE says suds can push water out of the tub and cause a leak or flooding. Turn the dishwasher off and let the suds dissipate, which may take several hours, and use only automatic dishwasher detergent. [9] Whirlpool adds that residue from dish soap or spray-on cleaners on pre-rinsed dishes can also cause excess suds. [7] GE says spilled liquid rinse aid can cause sudsing too, so wipe up spills right away. [9]
Door gasket. Whirlpool says to look for cracks, tears, flattened areas or food on the rubber seal, and to make sure no utensils or dishes stop the door from closing. [1] A soiled gasket can be cleaned with mild soap and water; a loose one can be pressed back in place; a damaged one needs replacing. [3]
Level. Whirlpool says an unlevel dishwasher can overflow the tub and leak beneath the door. It must sit on its leveling legs and be square in the cabinet. [3][7]
Filter and drain path. Whirlpool says to remove and rinse the filter, check the sump for debris and make sure the air gap, if you have one, is not blocked. [1]
Air gap and vent cap. GE says water leaking from the air gap on the sink can mean it is clogged; remove the cover and cap and clean out the debris. A loose vent cap inside the door can also leak, so hand tighten it. [8]
Hose connections. GE says water under the cabinet next to the dishwasher may be a loose hose clamp; tighten it with a flat-head screwdriver. [8] On Whirlpool's own dishwashers, the supply hookup sits behind the lower kick panel at the front left corner; Whirlpool says to hand-tighten the coupling, check it with pliers, and that an extra 1/4 to 1/2 turn may be needed to seal the rubber gasket. [3] Hookups vary by brand and model, so follow your own manual.
Run a short cycle afterward with the kick panel area in view and a dry towel on the floor. If the towel stays dry, watch it for the next few loads.
When the leak needs a technician
Some leak sources sit inside the machine. Whirlpool says to schedule service if you suspect a failing water inlet valve, persistent overfill, a cracked tub or a worn pump or diverter seal, or if the leak continues after gasket replacement and leveling. [1] GE says that over time, age and detergents can dry out the rubber gasket that seals the pump to the bottom of the tub, and that a faulty float or float switch can let the dishwasher overflow onto the floor. [10]
Water under the unit with no suds and no drain problem. GE recommends contacting service for any water coming from under the dishwasher that is not a plumbing problem. [9]
Water backing up or leaking at the air gap with no suds. GE says this may be a plumbing issue. [9] A practical read: that points to a plumber, not an appliance repair.
A leak alarm that comes back. Bosch's guidance for E15 is to turn off the water and contact support. [6]
Internal parts. Whirlpool says that if a component under the dishwasher other than the inlet hose or drain line is leaking, service is required, and to keep the water supply off until the unit is repaired. [3] Check your warranty before opening the machine.
What kind of water it is, and how to dry what got wet
Water that leaked from the supply line before it reached the tub is clean. UC Riverside's water categories list appliance malfunctions involving domestic water supply lines as Category 1. [11] Water that has been through a wash is different: UC Riverside lists discharge from dishwashers as Category 2, water with significant contamination that can cause discomfort or sickness if people are exposed. [11] Massachusetts guidance puts dishwasher overflow in Category 2 as well. [12] Wear gloves and wash surfaces with detergent and water.
GE warns that a dishwasher leak left unchecked could cause costly damage to flooring or subflooring. [8] The trouble is that most of it is hidden under the unit and the cabinets.
Remove the kick panel and look under the dishwasher with a flashlight for standing water.
Open the cabinets on both sides and check the cabinet floors and the toe kicks for swelling or dampness.
Press on the flooring in front of the dishwasher. Lifting vinyl, cupped wood or tile that sounds hollow can mean water got under it. EPA's water damage table, written for clean water damage in schools and commercial buildings, says to check that the underflooring is dry under vinyl, linoleum and tile, and that the subfloor under carpet or other flooring must also be cleaned and dried. [13]
Check the drywall behind and beside the unit. EPA says wallboard may be dried in place if there is no obvious swelling and the seams are intact; if not, remove and replace it. [13]
Dry fast. EPA says that if wet materials are dried within 24 to 48 hours of a leak, in most cases mold will not grow. [14] Keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50 percent. [14]
Be careful with fans on Category 2 water. The same EPA table says that if the water is contaminated with sewage or chemical or biological pollutants, do not use fans before determining that the water is clean or sanitary. [13] A practical step: wipe up and wash the wet area with detergent and water first, then dry it.

Repair, replace and cleanup costs
Angi's dishwasher repair cost guide, updated April 6, 2026, says standard repairs run $175 to $325, with most homeowners paying around $225; its summary gives a wider range of $75 to $600. It lists leak repair, from seals, hoses or tub cracks, at $100 to $250, hose replacement at $75 to $130 and pump replacement at $150 to $350. [15] Angi says the repair type, the brand and local labor rates drive the price, and that minimum service or diagnostic fees, often $50 to $80, may apply. [15]
Angi suggests repair is often the better choice if the dishwasher is less than eight years old and the repair costs under half the price of a new one, and puts a new dishwasher with installation at $500 to $1,300. [15]
Drying the kitchen is a separate bill. HomeAdvisor's June 2026 cost guide prices water damage restoration at about $5.25 per square foot for Category 2 water, against about $3.50 for Category 1, with a national average job of $3,868. [16] See the water damage restoration cost guide for what drives it.
Will insurance cover dishwasher water damage?
Often the damage is covered and the dishwasher is not. The Insurance Information Institute lists accidental discharge or overflow of water from a household appliance as a covered peril on common policy types such as the HO-3. [17] NerdWallet's June 2026 guide says homeowners insurance generally covers water damage from an appliance that suddenly fails but will not pay to replace the appliance, and typically will not cover a failure caused by wear and tear or lack of maintenance. [18]
A slow drip under the unit is treated differently. The Texas Department of Insurance says policies usually will not cover damage from gradual leaks or seepage, and that you usually must report water damage that was hidden from view within days after you first see it. [4] Check your own policy and call your insurer early. Renters: EPA says to report plumbing leaks immediately to the building owner or manager. [14] Doing it in writing leaves a record.
Common questions
Why is my dishwasher leaking from the bottom?
Common causes are suds from the wrong detergent, a worn or dirty door gasket, an unlevel tub, a loose supply or drain connection, and worn pump seals or a sticking inlet valve or float. [1] Where the water starts points to which one.
Can I run my dishwasher if it is leaking?
No. Whirlpool says to switch off power at the breaker, shut the water supply and avoid running the dishwasher until the source is fixed. [1]
Can using dish soap make a dishwasher leak?
Yes. GE says suds can push water out of the tub and cause a leak or flooding, and that only automatic dishwasher detergent should be used. Turn the machine off and let the suds dissipate, which may take several hours. [9]
What does E15 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
Bosch says E15 means the safety switch has detected water in the base of the dishwasher and the leakage protection system has activated. It says to turn off the water inflow and contact Bosch support. [6]
How much does it cost to fix a leaking dishwasher?
Angi's April 2026 guide puts leak repair at $100 to $250 and most standard repairs at $175 to $325. [15] Drying wet flooring or cabinets is extra.
Does homeowners insurance cover a leaking dishwasher?
Sudden water damage from an appliance is often covered, but the appliance itself usually is not, and gradual leaks or poor maintenance usually are not covered. [18][4] Check your own policy.
