Quick answer
Angi's September 2026 water damage cost guide puts repair of a ceiling damaged by water at $450 to $1,600, and Angi's May 2026 ceiling repair guide puts the average ceiling repair at about $1,077, with small cosmetic fixes at $150 or less and major water or structural damage at $4,500 or more. Stopping the leak is a separate bill: the ceiling guide lists $175 to $3,000 for plumbing, $360 to $1,550 for roof repair and $200 to $1,500 for HVAC repair, and Angi's other guides put roof repair higher. Angi names the amount of damage, the ceiling material and the underlying cause as price drivers. [4][3]
Do this first: keep the repair bill small
The least costly ceiling repair is the one that dries fast. What you do in the first day can decide whether you pay for a patch and paint or for new drywall, new insulation and mold removal.
Stop the water: close the fixture valve or main shutoff, turn off an attic air conditioner, or catch rainwater until a roofer can get there. The guide to water leaking from the ceiling covers these steps.
If water is near lights, outlets, cords or the panel, do not enter the water. Turn power off at the panel only if you can reach it from a dry spot; otherwise call the utility or an electrician.
Stay out from under any part of the ceiling that sags or bulges.
Photograph the ceiling, the drip and anything damaged before cleanup. The Texas Department of Insurance says to take pictures before repairs and keep damaged items until your adjuster has seen them. [1]
Start drying. EPA says drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours prevents mold growth in most cases. [2]
Do not patch or paint yet. Angi notes that if you do not fix the issue that caused the damage first, the ceiling damage will simply occur again after the repair. [3]
How much does ceiling leak repair cost in 2026?
A ceiling leak usually means two bills: one to repair the ceiling and one to fix whatever leaked. Here is what the main 2026 cost guides say about the ceiling part.
Angi's September 2026 water damage guide: repairing a ceiling damaged by water costs $450 to $1,600, with the severity of the leak as the primary cost driver. [4]
Angi's May 2026 ceiling repair guide: the typical ceiling repair runs about $150 to $4,500 (the guide's summary box says $150 to $4,420), with an average of about $1,077. A cosmetic crack or small hole can cost $150 or less, while structural problems or major water damage may cost $4,500 or more. [3]
HomeAdvisor's ceiling repair guide, updated June 17, 2026 (its headline still says 2025 data): most homeowners pay $438 to $1,718. [5]
HomeAdvisor's ceiling guide repeats Angi's average and per-square-foot rates, and its expert reviewer sits on Angi's Expert Review Board, so treat the two as one data set, not two independent estimates. [5]
Location matters too. Angi's May 2026 guide gives sample ranges of $570 to $1,380 in New York, $470 to $1,230 in Texas, $400 to $1,380 in Florida and $550 to $1,660 in California. [3]
Cost by ceiling type, damage size and repair
Ceiling pros price repairs either by the square foot of the repair or by the hour. Angi's May 2026 guide says to expect $45 to $90 per square foot overall, based on the amount of damage, and puts water damage repairs at $45 to $55 per square foot including labor and materials. [3]

Table source: Angi's ceiling repair cost guide, updated May 30, 2026. [3] By damage size, the same guide estimates $405 to $810 for about 9 square feet and $1,080 to $2,160 for about 24 square feet. For a whole ceiling, it lists replacing drywall at about $1.50 to $3.00 per square foot, covering removal of the old drywall and installation of the new. [3] Angi does not explain why that figure is so far below its $45 to $55 repair rate. This site's reading, not Angi's: the replacement figure covers taking down and hanging drywall across a whole ceiling, while the repair rate prices fixing a damaged section, labor included. Ask each contractor how a quote is priced and what it includes.
Finishing adds to it. HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide puts ceiling painting at $1 to $2.50 per square foot and drywall texture at $1.15 to $1.35 per square foot on top of the repair. It also warns that a popcorn ceiling in a home built before the 1980s may contain asbestos, and to contact an asbestos testing contractor before repairs. [5]
What it costs to fix the leak itself
The ceiling repair figures do not include stopping the water. Angi's guides price these separately from the ceiling work. [3]

Table sources: Angi's roof leak guide [6], ceiling repair guide [3], burst pipe guide [7] and bathroom leak guide. [8] Angi's own roof figures differ by guide: $360 to $1,550 in its ceiling guide, $400 to $2,000 in its September 2026 water damage guide [4] and $700 to $3,000 in its roof leak guide. Expect quotes anywhere across that span.
Labor drives most of these bills. Angi says labor is around 70 percent of a roof leak repair [6] and roughly 80 percent of a burst pipe repair. [7] Pipes hidden above ceiling panels need demolition before any repair can begin, which adds ceiling work. [7] If your roof is newer, check its warranty first; Angi notes the work may be covered. [6]
Put together, a water-damaged ceiling at Angi's $450 to $1,600 plus a roof leak at Angi's $700 to $3,000 comes to roughly $1,150 to $4,600. That is a combined figure this site calculated from two Angi guides, not a quote. [4][6]

Sources for the table: Angi's ceiling guide [3], HomeAdvisor's water damage guide [9] and mold remediation guide. [10] On insulation, a Department of Energy housing brief says wet insulation must be removed for a ceiling to dry properly. [11]
Time is the driver you control. The Massachusetts quick reference for water damage says to cut out and discard wallboard that has not been sufficiently dried within 48 hours. [12] A ceiling dried in time may need only paint; one left wet usually needs new drywall.
When the ceiling needs drying, not just a patch
If the ceiling sagged, the insulation above is soaked, or water spread into walls, the job becomes water damage restoration before it becomes ceiling repair. HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide puts water damage restoration at an average of $3,868, with most homeowners paying $1,383 to $6,369. [9] HomeAdvisor notes that drying is just the first step, and related repairs depend on the materials affected. [9]
Safe to do yourself
A small, dry, firm stain from a leak that is already fixed is usually a cosmetic job. HomeAdvisor says to repair the leak source first, clean the stained area, then apply a stain-resistant primer before painting. [5] Do not paint over mold; EPA says not to paint or caulk moldy surfaces. [2]
Will insurance pay for ceiling leak repair?
It depends on what caused the leak and on your policy. The Texas Department of Insurance says most homeowner and renters policies cover sudden and accidental water damage, such as a burst pipe or toilet overflow, but usually not damage from gradual leaks or seepage. [1] The Insurance Information Institute lists accidental discharge of water from a plumbing, heating or air conditioning system or household appliance among the perils covered by common policy types such as the HO-3, says policies vary, and says policies will not cover damage due to lack of maintenance. [13]
Roof leaks: Washington's insurance commissioner says that if a storm or accident damages your roof, you need to fix it quickly, and insurance will not cover water damage if you delay repairs. [14]
Mold: Washington's insurance commissioner says homeowner insurance usually does not cover mold damage unless it comes from water damage your insurance covers, and that some insurers provide limited mold coverage. [14]
Your deductible: it is subtracted from what your insurer pays. The Triple-I example: with a $500 deductible on a $10,000 covered loss, you would receive $9,500. [15] A small ceiling patch may cost less than your deductible.
Report water damage promptly; TDI says you usually must report damage that was hidden from view within days after you first see it. [1] Then check your own policy and ask your agent before work starts.
Common questions
How much does it cost to fix a water-damaged ceiling?
Angi's September 2026 water damage guide puts it at $450 to $1,600, with the severity of the leak as the main driver. [4] Angi's May 2026 ceiling guide prices water damage repairs at $45 to $55 per square foot and says major water or structural damage can reach $4,500 or more. [3] Fixing the leak is extra.
How much does it cost to fix a sagging ceiling from a leak?
Angi's May 2026 guide puts sagging ceiling repair at around $75 an hour for labor plus materials, and says the pro will likely need to replace the drywall and deal with old insulation. [3] If joists were damaged, Angi puts repairing a ceiling joist at $150 to $750. Stay out from under a sagging ceiling until it is dealt with.
Can I just paint over a water stain on the ceiling?
Only after the leak is fixed and the ceiling is completely dry. HomeAdvisor says to clean the stain and use a stain-resistant primer before painting. [5] Never paint over mold; EPA says paint over moldy surfaces is likely to peel. [2]
Does homeowners insurance cover ceiling leak repair?
Often, when the leak was sudden and accidental, such as a burst pipe. Gradual leaks and lack of maintenance usually are not covered. [1][13] Your deductible comes off the top, so check your own policy and compare it with the repair estimate. [15]
How long does ceiling leak repair take?
HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide says a small patch can take minutes, while extensive water damage or structural problems take several days. [5] Add drying time before the patch: UMN Extension advises not repairing interior damage until ceilings and walls are dry. [16]
